Better Choice Measure to Generate $1.6 Billion Total Economic Output for San Diego County
New study projects Better Choice Measure will generate significant economic output during construction and an ongoing impact of $203 million per year after completion of construction
SAN DIEGO (September 12, 2019) – Today the Better Choice Measure announced a new study projecting that the measure will generate a total economic output of $1.6 billion during the 10-year construction period and an ongoing total economic output of $203.6 million every year after completion of construction.
“The Better Choice measure is a better choice for our regional economy,” said Jerry Sanders, President and CEO of theSan Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. “In addition to creating significant new jobs and being a powerful economic driver for our region, the Better Choice Measure would create much needed new housing for San Diego families near more than 129,000 jobs in North San Diego County.”
The Better Choice Measure, if approved, would provide San Diego County residents a better choice for the development of privately-owned property located just west of I-15 and less than 2 miles from the cities of Escondido, San Marcos andVista. Currently, the San Diego County General Plan designates the site for up to 2 million square feet of commercial and retail development, along with only 99 luxury estate lots.
Instead, a YES vote on the Better Choice Measure in March 2020 will affirm the County Board of Supervisors’ unanimous approval in 2018 of 2,135 new homes – 62% of which will be affordable for working families – 1,209 acres of permanently preserved open space, 36 acres of parks and 19 miles of trails on this site. The community will include 81,000 square feet of neighborhood serving retail amenities. In addition, the Better Choice Measure provides a significant economic and fiscal impact for San Diego County including:
Total during the 10-year construction period:
- 6,280 new jobs
- $34.8 million in new wages
Annually at buildout:
- $3.65 million in property and sales tax revenue for County and SANDAG
- $1.4 million in property tax revenue for Deer Springs Fire Protection District
- 1,446 permanent jobs
- $71 million in new wages
“The Better Choice Measure offers a wide range of economic benefits for both the short- and long-term,” said W. Erik Bruvold, Chief Executive Officer of the San Diego North Economic Development Council. “This measure will improve prosperity in North County. Its passage will help North County’s job-housing balance – the key imperative for NorthCounty’s competitiveness and in preserving our region’s amazing quality of life.”
The Better Choice Measure, which will appear on the March 2020 ballot, launched its YES campaign in July 2019 and has recently been endorsed by the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, Deputy Sheriff’s Association of San Diego County and CAL FIRE Local 2881, among many others, all in support of a YES vote in March 2020.
