Casa Familiar, MAAC, and Chicano Federation Endorse Better Choice Measure

Leading advocacy, social service and community development organizations with a combined 150 years of dedicated service to San Diego County families join county wide coalition in support of creating affordably-priced housing for San Diegans

SAN DIEGO, CA (November 15, 2019)Casa Familiar, MAAC, and Chicano Federation, three of San Diego County’s leading nonprofit agencies serving San Diegans for more than five decades, announced today their official endorsement of the Better Choice Measure, citing it as the best choice to address the critical housing shortage for working families in San Diego County.

“The demand for affordably-priced housing is much greater than the current supply in our region,” said Lisa Cuestas, President and Executive Director of Casa Familiar. “We fully support the Better Choice Measure because we believe it will deliver critically-needed housing that will benefit working families throughout the region.”

Compared to the County General Plan, which designates this land for 2 million square feet of retail and office space and 99 luxury homes, the Better Choice Measure is the best option for this private property according to Casa Familiar.

“As an organization whose history is rooted in providing San Diego’s working families with secure, safe, and affordable housing, we are proud to back the Better Choice Measure, and applaud the Measure’s plan to provide 2,135 homes, 62 percent of which will be affordable for working families,” stated Nancy Maldonado, Chief Executive Officer of Chicano Federation.

If approved by voters in March, the Better Choice Measure will provide numerous benefits for the local community, including $3 million for the County’s housing affordability fund, $56 million in local road improvements and $4.4 million in funding for fire safety and prevention measures, among others.

“At a critical time when housing affordability continues to be one of our region’s toughest challenges, MAAC proudly endorses the Better Choice Measure, which offers a better choice for San Diegans, creating a thoughtfully planned community,” stated Arnulfo Manriquez, President & Chief Executive Officer of MAAC. “As advocates and builders of healthy communities that enable residents to live, work, and thrive in their own cities, we strongly encourage voters to support the Better Choice Measure in the upcoming primary election on March 3, 2020.”

Since the launch of its campaign in July 2019, the Better Choice Measure has gained endorsements from State Senator Ben Hueso, Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas-Salas, Cal FIRE Fighters Local #2881, as well as the San Diego Regional and National City Chambers of Commerce, among many others.
