Three Chambers of Commerce Endorse the Better Choice Measure

Carlsbad, San Ysidro and National City Chambers of Commerce join coalition of elected officials and civic organizations in support of creating affordably-priced housing for San Diegans

SAN DIEGO, CA (September 30, 2019) – The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce and National City Chamber of Commerce have all officially endorsed the Better Choice Measure this week, applauding the Measure’s commitment to provide a significant amount of affordably-priced homes for working families in San Diego County.

These Chambers across the County support the Measure’s plan to create 2,135 homes – 62% of which will be affordably-priced for working families – along the I-15 corridor to expand housing options for San Diego County’s workforce.

“San Diego County’s supply of affordably-priced homes cannot keep up with the County’s rapid job growth,” said Bret Schanzenbach, President & CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. “That is why we urge a Yes vote on the Better Choice Measure for the numerous ways it supports local jobs in communities across the county, from North County to South Bay.”

A Yes vote on the Better Choice Measure in March 2020 would affirm the County Board of Supervisors’ unanimous 2018 approval of a plan that calls for 2,135 homes on 1,985 acres of privately-owned land along with 36 acres of parks, 19 miles of trails and 1,200 acres of permanent open space, instead of the County General Plan designation that would permit 2 million square feet of commercial and retail development along with 99 luxury estates. The Better Choice Measure would also create one of County’s first carbon-neutral residential communities.

The three Chambers also support the Measure for its positive economic impact in the region. During the project’s 10-year construction period, the new housing community will create 6,280 jobs and produce $34.8 million in wages. Once complete, the project will generate $3.64 million in property and sales taxes each year.

“The Better Choice Measure will have a significant impact on our regional economy and our workforce,” said Jason Wells, Executive Director of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce. “When families can live near their workplace, quality of life is improved, which ultimately affects our businesses and economy.”

The three Chambers of Commerce join a continually growing coalition in support of voting Yes on the Measure. The Better Choice Measure has recently been endorsed by CAL FIRE Local 2881, Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of San Diego County, Local Laborers 89 and San Diego North Economic Development Council, among many others.
